ROAD SIGNS
Road signs or traffic signs are the devices mounted on road
side they are fixed or portable devices which specify information either by
word or signals. Traffic signs are most used cheapest traffic control devices.
TYPES OF ROAD SIGNS
1.Regulatory or mandatory signs
2.Warning or cautionary signs
3.Informatory signs or guide signs
REGULATORY OR MANDATORY SIGNS
regulatory road signs are used to inform the road user to
certain rules and regulations to provide safety and free flow of traffic .for
the informatory signs are shown the some specified information like speed
offence directions, keep left ,no turn ,overtaking prohibited, straight
prohibited ,no u turn ,no right turn, no left turn, horn prohibited, sound horn
restricted , no parking, no stopping, speed limit ,load limit ,one
way, axle load limit.
WARNING OR CAUTIONARY SIGNS
Warning signs are warned or cautions to the road user to the
specified traffic condition. so the road user to take action . warnings signs is
the triangular shape warning signs are provided for the following places. Major
road ahead ,side road, y intersection, un gradual level crossing, gradual level crossing, opening ridge, cycle stop sign ahead, right hand
ahead, right reverse curve, left reverse curve ,tight winding curve, hairpin
bend, zig zag, block spot, narrow bridge ahead, rough road ,dangerous dip.
INFORMATORY OR GUIDE SIGNS
Informatory signs are used to provide the information to
road user for like routes , places and distance it will help the road user to
informed the historical interests safe and comfortable, informatory signs are
placed for highway route marking purposes . Providing directions regarding
destinations and distance signs also in places rest area ,service signs,
parking area sign, first aid locations kilometer limits, elevation land marks
etc,
PURPOSE OF ROAD SIGN
1.to restrict overtaking in dangerous places
2 to restrict parking
3.to restrict overtaking in dangerous places
4,guide the road user to different routes
5.to reduce accident
LIMITATION OF ROAD SIGNS
1.thay are not capable of spacing vehicle platoons on busy
streets so that the same traffic performance is obtained as with traffic
signals.
2.they are not capable of being road at long distances.
Which can be done with flashing or continuous traffic signal indications
3.they are not capable of providing continuous guidance
through complicated areas.
PRINCIPAL TO BE FOLLOWED IN THE LOCATION OF ROAD SIGNS.
THE ROAD SIGNS BE LOCATED ON KERBED ROADS SHOULD BE
1 for highways the road signs should not locate less than 60 cm from the edge of the kerb
2.the bottom edge of the sign board should not be less than
2m above the kerb
THE ROAD SIGNS BE LOCATED ON UN KERBED ROADS SHOULD BE
1.The road sign
should not locate less than 2m from the carriage way
2.The lowest part of the road sign should not be less than
1.5 m from the crown of the carriageway
3.Necessary definition plates are to be used wih the
suitable word written in English and other languages if necessary
4.The traffic signs should fulfill the requirement
